ENOKI
A mushroom that trades stocks
This is not a metaphor and not a cartoon. In December 2021, at the Unconventional Computing Laboratory in Bristol, scientists pushed seven pairs of needle electrodes into an enoki mushroom and recorded its electrical activity, one reading per second, for 14 days. That recording is public. We play it back at the speed it was recorded, and we let it run a wallet on Robinhood Chain.
A real mushroom, wired up
Seven electrode pairs, 24-bit logger, one sample per second. Every millivolt on this page comes from that file, checksum published.
Spikes become letters, letters become words
When the voltage jumps above its recent average, that is a spike. Spikes close together on the same electrode form a word. The rule is the one from the 2022 paper; the thresholds are ours and are printed below.
Every word is an order
Each electrode watches three or four stocks. The length of the word picks one. If the mushroom does not hold it, it buys; if it does, it sells. It pays with its own income: 1% of every trade of its token, paid in SPY.
Seven nerves, one recording, played back
Each strip is one electrode pair. Grey is the voltage, one point per minute; amber ticks are spikes; amber bands are words. The green line is now. To the right of it is the future, and yes, you can see it: the recording is public, so what the mushroom will do is public too.
Fixed before the replay, printed here, never tuned after
The spike detector is the one in Adamatzky, Royal Society Open Science 9:211926 (2022). A sample is a spike when its value sits more than δ above the average of the surrounding 13.3 minutes, and spikes must be at least 5 minutes apart. The paper's own δ of 0.1 mV fires constantly on this file, so δ is chosen, per nerve, by one rule: the smallest value on a fixed grid that gives the paper's reported spacing of 102 minutes or more.
| Nerve | Pair | δ mV | Spikes | Per day | Mean gap | Words |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1–2 | 0.5 | 152 | 10.8 | 118.2 min | 51 |
| 1 | 3–4 | 0.75 | 157 | 11.2 | 114.8 min | 33 |
| 2 | 5–6 | 0.75 | 133 | 9.5 | 136.1 min | 48 |
| 3 | 7–8 | 0.75 | 63 | 4.5 | 289.8 min | 23 |
| 4 | 9–10 | 3 | 1 | 0.1 | — | 1 |
| 5 | 11–12 | 0.3 | 62 | 4.4 | 294.7 min | 12 |
| 6 | 13–14 | 0.75 | 101 | 7.2 | 177.1 min | 30 |
- Each nerve owns three or four stocks. The menu is every Robinhood stock token that has both a Chainlink price feed and a Uniswap pool that fills a $100 order within 2% of that feed, checked once, on 14 September 2026: 26 stocks. Alphabetical, dealt round-robin to the seven nerves like cards. Nothing was arranged.
- The word length picks the stock. A word of length L on nerve c names the ((L − 1) mod n)-th stock of that nerve, n being how many it holds. One spike is the first stock; five spikes on a four-stock nerve wraps back to it.
- Toggle. Not held → buy. Held → sell all of it. SPY → rest, because SPY is what it is paid in.
- Size. A buy spends 5% of cash per spike in the word, capped at 25%. Cash is the mushroom's SPY balance.
- When. A word is complete 102 minutes after its last spike. That is the order time. The first 800 seconds of the file are ignored, an edge effect.
- No exceptions. Under $5 of cash: logged as too poor to trade. No pool within 1% slippage: logged as no market. Nothing is retried, nothing is edited.

Everything it will do, in order
Because the recording is fixed and the rule is fixed, the whole loop is known in advance. Here it is. What is not known is the price of anything on those days, whether the pool will fill, and whether the mushroom will have any money. Rows fill in with a transaction hash as they happen, or with the reason they did not.

Can a mushroom beat the S&P 500?
The mushroom is paid in SPY. The benchmark is doing nothing: keep the SPY. So the score is simple. Everything it holds, priced by the Chainlink feeds on this chain, divided by the price of SPY, against the SPY it was ever paid. Above one, it is winning. Below one, the index is.

The parts that aren't the mushroom
- The mushroom is not alive on this page. It was recorded in December 2021 in Bristol. What you see is that file played back. It does not know a token exists.
- The thresholds are ours. The detector is the paper's; the paper's own δ fires every nine minutes on this file, so δ is set per nerve by the grid rule above. Change it and the words change.
- "Words" are a statistical grouping. The paper says so itself. Nothing here is language.
- Nine stocks are missing on purpose. CLSK, COIN, CRWV, EWY, IONQ, NBIS, ORCL, RGTI and RKLB have a price feed but no pool that fills a $100 order near that price, so the mushroom cannot buy them. They are out, and the reason is here.
- The future is visible. The whole 14-day schedule is public. Anyone can trade ahead of it. Orders are small, and this is said, not hidden.
- The drawing at the top is a drawing. Dots placed by a program, not a photograph, not data.
- Prices are not live. Chainlink feeds update every 24 hours or on a 0.5% move. The score can be a day old.
- The token has no claim on anything. Not on the portfolio, not on fees, not on the mushroom. It is the thing the mushroom launched. An art experiment, not an investment.
- Trading costs money. A dry run of the whole loop at today's prices, with prices held still, turns $380 into $367: about 3% per loop goes to pool fees and slippage before the market moves at all. The mushroom starts with that handicap.
- Nothing is retried, nothing is edited. A failed order stays failed in the log. If the loop ends with the mushroom poorer than SPY, that is the result.
